What Can We Learn from Tu Youyou
Tu Youyou, born in 1930, is a world-famous pharmacologist. In 2015, Tu was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her discovery of artemisinin, an entirely new anti-malarial treatment. She was the first Chinese woman scientist to win a Nobel Prize. Her research was inspired by traditional Chinese medicine theory, and after hundreds of failures, she extracted artemisinin in 1972. Since 2000, artemisinin has saved the lives of more than 200 million African malaria patients. As Tu Youyou said, \"Artemisinin is a gift from traditional Chinese medicine to the world.\"
