People who do skydiving need a lot of courage. It is very frightening to jump out of a plane at a height of about 3,650 meters, but more and more people are doing skydiving. People become interested in skydiving for different reasons.

Martha Richards is a doctor. She took her first skydiving when she was a student. She was strapped (捆绑) together with a skydiving instructor. They jumped from the plane together. “At that moment I was very afraid,” says Martha, “but I was also very excited. Then suddenly I didn’t feel afraid anymore.”

Skydivers say that skydiving makes them feel like a bird. When they fall,

skydivers can move and turn very accurately (准确地). Sometimes a number of skydivers fall together. They move in some designed ways and make patterns as they fall. This kind of skydiving is called formation skydiving. Formation skydiving is interesting to see, but also dangerous. If someone makes a mistake, he could hit another skydiver and cause a serious accident. Before they open their parachutes, skydivers usually fall for a period between 30 seconds and a minute. They fall at a speed of about 200 kilometers per hour. But skydivers do not feel that they are falling. The reason is that they fall at a constant speed and they are very high above the ground. When parachutes open, skydivers fall for another 5 minutes before they arrive on the ground. During this time they can enjoy the peace and quiet.

Skydiving is not as dangerous as many people think. The safest way to do skydiving is with an instructor. There are rarely very serious accidents. Sometimes experienced skydivers have serious accidents. This is usually because they do dangerous things. Of course, when people skydive, there is always a risk. But some people say that the risk is necessary to make the sport exciting.

It was at least two months before Christmas when nineyearold Almie Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bicycle. As Christmas drew nearer, her wish for a bicycle seemed to disappear, or so we thought. We bought Baby Sitter’s Club dolls and a doll house.

Then, much to our surprise, on December 23rd, she said that she “really wanted a

4

bike more than anything else”. It was just too late. With all the details of preparing Christmas dinner and buying lastminute gifts, how could we take the time to select the “right bike” for our little girl? So, here we were—Christmas Eve around 9:00 p.m., with Almie and her sixyearold brother, Dylan, settled (安置) snug (暖和的) in their beds. Now we could only think of the bicycle and the disappointment of our child.

“What if I make a little bicycle out of clay (泥) and write a note that she could trade the clay model in for a real bike?” her dad asked.

“This is an expensive item and she is such a big girl, it would be much better for her to pick it out.”

So he spent the next four hours working hard with clay to make a tiny bike. On Christmas morning, we were excited for Almie to open the little heartshaped package with the beautiful red and white clay bike and the note. Finally, she opened it and read the note aloud.

“Does this mean that I trade in this bike that Daddy made me for a real one?” Pleased, I said, “Yes.”Almie had tears in her eyes when she replied, “I could never trade in this beautiful bicycle that Daddy made me. I’d rather keep this than get a real bike.”

At that moment, we would have moved heaven and earth to buy her every bicycle on the planet!

5.Choose the right time order of the following events. a.The girl asked for a new bike.

b.The girl opened the little heartshaped package. c.The parents bought the girl a modern and popular doll. d.The father made the girl a bike with clay.

e.The girl would rather keep the clay bike than get a real one. A.a, b, c, e, d C.a, c, b, d, e

B.a, c, d, b, e D.a, b, d, c, e

6.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A.The parents wanted the girl to have the clay bike forever.

5

B.Tears were in the girl’s eyes because she didn’t like the present at all. C.The girl never lost her desire for a bike.

D.The parents paid little attention to the daughter’s desire for a bike at first. 7.Why did Dad make the clay bicycle? A.He wanted his daughter to buy a real one. B.He didn’t want to disappoint his daughter. C.He thought his daughter would like it. D.He wanted to give his daughter a surprise. 8.What can be inferred from the last sentence? A.The parents were happy and encouraged. B.The parents felt comfortable and relaxed. C.The parents were moved and felt proud of the girl. D.The parents felt sorry for the girl.
