Reading Comprehension
Love can’t conquer all. So, before couples tie the knot, they should know what they’re getting into. The taboo against couples living together before marriage is decreasing, and more and more people are saying”I do” after they’ve spent months, or even years, living together. As much as a person loves another, he or she never really knows what happens behind closed doors unless he or she is standing on the other side. While some people view living together before marriage as immoral, couples are actually expanding the boundaries of their relationship by moving in
together. For example, the division of, household responsibilities can be a major issue for newlyweds. By living together, couples can solve imbalances in the distribution of those responsibilities before someone realizes he or she has married a lazy bum. This may seem like a small point, but how many women—and men—are out there who never thought they would be the only ones cooking, washing dishes, vacuuming, hopping, scrubbing, disinfecting, cleaning laundry, dusting, etc. ? One of the largest problems in marriages is the “m” word: money. If couples live together before marriage, they learn one another’s saving and spending styles. By baring expenses, people learn not only how each person controls the purse strings but how to discuss finance matters with each other. It’s important for couples to figure out budget priorities before they are married, and this is difficult to do unless a person has been sharing expenses with his or her partner. If couples don’t have their financial sues in order, they are bound to surface; causing trouble in the marriage. It’s also difficult to know someone intimately without living with him or her. A special bond forms between people who share their living space, their personal longings, and their lives together. Some things you just don’t know until you’ve lived with someone. While some people believe living together before marriage is inappropriate, like most everything else in this country, it is a choice that everyone should respect. Living together can be a positive experience that will later reinforce a marriage, but it can also be something that ends a relationship. But if a relationship is going to end, it’s better people discover the hard truth before they marry. Even though two people love each other and enjoy spending time together, the real question is, “Can you live together?” People might want to find out before they make the serious decision to marry.

Is language, like food,a basic human need without which a child at a critical period of life can be starved and damaged? Judging from the drastic experiment of
Frederick II in the thirteenth century, it may be. Hoping to discover what language a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue,he told the nurses to keep silent. All the infants died before the first year. But clearly there was more than lack of language here. What was missing was good mothering. Without good mothering,in the first year of life especially, the capacity to survive is seriously affected. Today no such severe lack exists as that ordered by Frederick. Nevertheless, some children are still backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive to the signals of the infant, whose brain is programmed to learn language rapidly. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring skills passes and the language might never be learned so easily again. A bird learns to sing and to fly rapidly at the right time, but the process is slow and hard once the critical stage has passed. Experts suggest that speech stages are reached in a fixed sequence and at a constant age,but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be a high IQ. At twelve weeks a baby smiles and makes vowel-like sounds,at twelve months he can speak simple words and understand simple commands,at eighteen months he has a vocabulary of three to fifty words. At three he knows about 1,000 words which he can put into sentences, and at four he knows his language differs from that of his parents in style rather than grammar. Recent evidence suggests that an infant is born with the capacity of speaking. What is special about man’s brain, compared with that of the capacity,is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of,say,a toy-bear with the sound pattern “toy-bear”. And even more incredible is the young brain’s ability to pick out an order in language from the mixture of sound around him,to analyze,to combine and recombine the parts of a language in new ways. But speech has to be induced and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child, where the mother recognizes the signals in the child’s babbling, grasping and smiling, and responds to them. Insensitivity of the mother to these signals dull the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out only the obvious signals. Sensitivity to the child’s non-verbal signals is essential to the growth and development of language.
46. What is the purpose of the drastic experiment of Frederick II in the thirteenth century?
A.To prove that a baby couldn’t live without his mother.
B.To discover what language a child would speak without hearing any human speech.
C.To find out what role careful nursing would play in teaching a child to speak. D.To prove that a child would be damaged without learning a language.
正确答案:B
解析:题目问:弗里德里克二世在13世纪所做的实验的目的是什么?第一段“Hoping to discover whatlanguage a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue,he told the nurses to keep silent.”通过这句话可知,弗雷德里克Ⅱ想要了解如果婴儿听不到母语,那他会说一种什么样的语言。本着这个目的,他要求护
士们保持沉默。所以,答案是B。
47. Today some children are backward in speaking because_____. A.they are incapable of learning langrage rapidly B.they are faced with so much language at once
C.their mothers respond inadequately to their attempts to speak D.their brain is not programmed to learn language rapidly

There are so many bad things about women drivers, I don’t know where to start. I guess I will get the ball rolling by talking about one of my biggest pet peeves. Why do women have to wait until they are in the car and barreling down the highway at sixty miles an hour before they decide it is time to put on their makeup? Is there a law that I don’t know about that says women have to do their makeup in the car because the bathroom isn’t good enough for them? I don’t know if anyone has ever informed women, but the mirror in the car is not a makeup mirror. The mirror is used for looking at other cars and pedestrians. So please do us all a favor and do your makeup before you leave the house. The next order of business for the men should be to find out whose brilliant idea it was for women to have a phone in the car. This has disaster written all over it. Everyone knows that women can’t even walk and chew gum at the same time, so how in the hell are they going to drive and talk on the phone? Why is it that every time you are sitting at a red light the woman in front of you thinks this is a good time to make a phone call? “HELLO LADY! THE LIGHT IS GREEN, GET OFF THE PHONE AND GO! “I really think we need to outlaw women using their cell phones while they drive. Another accident waiting to happen is when you get two women in the same car together. How many times have you seen two women just yakking away and the driver isn’t paying attention to where she is going? There is either one of two things that happens when two women get in the car together. One: The women are talking and the driver doesn’t see the stop sign in front of her, so she runs it. Two: The two women are talking and at the last minute the driver realizes there is her mm, so she stops really quick in front of you and you almost rear-end her. So women please pay more attention to your driving and, for the love of God, use your turn signals—they aren’t there for decoration. I know all women out there are yelling at me and saying, “Women are better drivers than guys.”
If women were better drivers than men, why do guys drive on dates? Why don’t women ever tell the guy, I will come pick you up? Why are almost all truck drivers guys? Why is it when a woman is going to move and she rents a U-Haul van, she always calls a guy to drive it for her? When was the last time you watched a woman win the Indy 500 or Daytona 500? All of these questions just go to prove why guys are the kings of the road.

When people are struck by lightening, they fall to the ground as though they were struck by a severe blow to the head. After the shock they may remain unconscious, become semiconscious or be conscious but confused and dazed,at least for a time. Flashes of light may continue passing before their eyes, and blindness and deafness may follow. The nervous system may be badly affected, causing paralysis, pain in the limbs and even hemorrhage. There will be burns where the lightening passed through the body. And like all electrical burns, they are often deep and severe. All persons, especially campers and hunters, should know how to give first aid to someone who has been struck by lightening. Do not be afraid to touch the victim. You won’t get a shock. The lightening has already been grounded. Remember that speed is of the greatest importance in severe cases. The first thing to do is to loosen tight clothing about the throat and waist. Then clear the air passages of mucus(黏液)if present, and apply artificial respiration if necessary. Give mouth resuscitation, if needed, or give oxygen if available. Many victims thought to be dead have been revived after treatment. Send someone for a doctor as soon as possible, but don’t leave the victim alone. If a doctor is not available, take the person to a hospital as soon as the person can be safely moved. Signs of shock are:pale, cold, sticky skin;weak, rapid pulse; shallow, irregular breathing or,in extreme cases, no breathing at all. To treat shock, you must keep the patient lying down with the head lower than the feet and cover him or her with a blanket but watch out for overheating. Giving a stimulating hot tea or coffee will help, but only if the patient is thoroughly conscious. After breathing has been restored and shock is treated, treat the burns. Apply some salve and cover them with a clean cloth or a sterile dressing. If conscious, the patient will be badly frightened,so do all you can to reassure. A little
knowledge and a helping hand may save someone’s life.

Now, more than ever, it doesn’t matter who you are but what you look like. Janet was just twenty-five years old. She had a great job and seemed happy. She committed suicide. In her suicide note she wrote that she felt “un-pretty” and that no man ever loved her. Amy was just fifteen when hospitalized for eating disorders. She suffered from both anorexia and bulimia. She lost more than one hundred pounds in two months. Both victims battled problems with their body image and physicalap-pearance. “Oh, I’m too fat.” “My butt is too big and my breasts too small.” “I hate my body and I feel ugly.” “I want to be beautiful.” The number of men and women who feel these things about themselves is increasing dramatically. I can identify two main categories of body-image problems: additive versus subtractive. Those who enhance their appearance through cosmetic surgery fall into the additive group; those who hope to improve their looks through starvation belong to the subtractive category. Both groups have two things in common: They are never satisfied and they are always obsessed. Eating disorders afflict as many as five to ten million women and one million men in the United States. One out of four female college students suffers from an eating disorder. But why? Card Kirby, a University of Nebraska mental health counselor, says that body image and eating disorders are continuum addictions in which individuals seek to discover their identities. The idea that we should look a certain way and possess a certain shape is instilled in us at a very early age. Young girls not only play with Barbie dolls that display impossible, even comical, proportions, but they are also bombarded with images of supermodels. These images leave an indelible mental imprint of what society believes a female body should look like. Kirby adds that there is a halo effect to body image as well: “We immediately identify physical attractiveness to mean success and happiness.” The media can be blamed for contributing to various body, image illnesses. We cannot
walk into a bookstore without being exposed to perfect male and female bodies on the covers of magazines. We see such images every day—on commercials, billboards, on television, and in movies. These images continually remind women and young girls that if you want to be happy you must be beautiful, and if you want to be beautiful you must be thin. This ideal may be the main objective of the fashion, cosmetic, diet, fitness, and plastic surgery industries who stand to make millions from body-image anxiety, But does it work for us? Are women who lose weight in order to be toothpick thin really happy? Are women who have had breast implants really happy? What truly defines a person? Is it his or her physical appearance or is it character? Beauty is supposed to be “skin deep.” But we can all be beautiful inside. People are killing themselves for unrealistic physical standards dictated by our popular culture. We need to be made more aware of this issue. To be celebrity-thin is not to be beautiful nor happy. It can also be unattractive. Individuals who are obsessed with their bodies are only causing damage to themselves and their loved ones. But as long as the media maintain their message that “thin is in,” then the medical and psychological problems our society faces will continue to grow.

Americans today don’t place a very high value on intellect. Our heroes are athletes, entertainers, and entrepreneurs, not scholars.Even our schools are where we send our children to get a practical education—not to pursue knowledge for the sake of knowledge.Symptoms of pervasive anti-intellectualism in our schools aren’t difficult to find. “Schools have always been in a society where practical is more important than intellectual, “says education writer Diane Ravitch. “Schools could be a counterbalance.” Ravitch’s latest book,Left Back: A Century of Failed School Reforms, traces the roots of anti-intellectualism in our schools, concluding they are anything but a counterbalance to the American distaste for intellectual pursuits. But they could and should be.Encouraging kids to reject the life of the mind leaves them vulnerable to exploitation and control.Without the ability to think critically,to defend their ideas and understand the ideas of others, they cannot fully participate in
our democracy. “Continuing along this path”,says writer Earl Shorris, “we will become a second-rate country. We will have a less civil society.” “Intellect is resented as a form of power or privilege,” writes historian and professor Richard Hofs-tadter in Anti-intellectualism in American Life, a Pulitzer Prize winning book on the roots of anti-intellectualism in US politics, religion, and education. “From the beginning of our history”,says Hofstadter, “our democratic and populist urges have driven us to reject anything that smells of elitism.” Practicality, common sense, and native intelligence have been considered more noble qualities than anything you could learn from a book. Ralph Waldo Emerson and other Transcendentalist philosophers thought schooling and rigorous book learning put unnatural restraints on children: “We are shut up in schools and college recitation rooms for 10 or 15 years and come out at last with a bellyful of words and do not know a thing.” Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn exemplified American anti-intellectualism.lts hero avoids being civilized-going to school and learning to read-so he can preserve his innate goodness. Intellect, according to Hofstadter,is different from native intelligence,a quality we reluctantly admire. Intellect is the critical, creative, and contemplative side of the mind.Intelligence seeks to grasp, manipulate, re-order, and adjust, while intellect examines, ponders, wonders, theorizes, criticizes and imagines. School remains a place where intellect is mistrusted.Hofstathar says our country’s educational system is in the grips of people who “joyfully and militantly proclaim their hostility to intellect and their eagerness to identify with children who show the least intellectual promise.”

71. Dun took a deep breath, thinking over what had been said and searching in his mind for a possible course of action. Not for the first time in his flying career,he felt himself in the grip of an a cute sense of apprehension, only this time his awareness of his responsibility for the safety of a huge, complex aircraft and nearly sixty lives was tinged with a sudden icy premonition of disaster. Was this, then what it felt like? Older pilots, those who had been in combat in the war, always maintained that if you kept at the game long enough you’d buy it in the end. How was it that in the space of half an hour a normal,every-day, routing flight, carrying a crowd of happy football fans, could change into a nightmare nearly four miles above the earth, something that would shriek across the front pages of a hundred newspapers?

In American history, law and order may be the political issue that people always took delight in talking about. However, what makes people feel distressed is that millions of Americans visibly have never thought of being transgressor themsevels.much less criminals. They pay less and less attention to the provision of laws aiming at protecting their society.Nowadays, it is common to see that people litter at random, evade taxes, make forbidden noises, and ignore discipline when they are driving. Sometimes people are made to feel that those who defy law represent the intending trends. David Riesman, a sociologist in Harvard University, considers that most Americans take the so-called minor mistakes made unconcernedly for granted. He also considers that in current American society a perilous tendency that only the fools abide by laws has appeared in American moral values.

74. You are required to write about 200 words on the following topic: “To what extent is the use of animals in scientific research acceptable”.
正确答案: To What Extent is the Use of Animals in Scientific Research Acceptable Nowadays, using animals in scientific researches becomes more and more popular. There are different opinions, for and against, relating this controversial issue. Some people agree with this method, others try to save animals’ lives. This essay tries to give some arguments to prove that we can not avoid this method in scientific researches. Let us take the medicine as an example. When doctors learn about a new kind of viruses, they usually make tests to find out how virus affects on animals; Mice are used in most of cases. Doctors then have different experiments to cure animals. The final result is new kind of medicines, which can be used to save human life when they affect this virus.Another case is when scientists have jobs in some strange, or dangerous areas, for example in the depth of oceans, in the extreme cold weather, or some areas affected by diseases. Animals can be the pioneer, and they help scientists to save their valuable lives to continue their discoveries. We can not ignore opinions about humankind. Some people try to argue against the death of animals in scientific experiments. It is true that we also pay our tears when seeing animals killed. But there is a question: Who will play roles in these unsafe experiments? It is clear that the job must be done. Nothing is absolute. If we want to save life for ourselves, we must agree with the fact that animals continue to be used in scientific researches. Some things must be lost in experiments.
