A letter to Edward, a columnist(报刊专栏作家) Dear Mr Expert,

I grew up in an unhappy and abusive home. I always promised myself that I’d get out as soon aspossible. Now, at age 20, I have a good job and a nice house, and I’m really proud of the independenceI’ve achieved.

Here’s the problem: several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had placeslike mine — so much so that they make mine theirs.

It started out with a couple of them spending the weekends with me. But now they seem to take it forgranted that they can show up any time they like. They bring boyfriends over, talk on the phone and stayout forever.

I enjoy having my friends here sometimes — it makes the place feel comfortable and warm— but thisis my home, not a party house. I was old enough to move out on my own, so why can’t I seem to ask myfriends to respect my privacy(隐私)? Joan

Edward’s reply to Joan Dear Joan,

If your family didn’t pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have troubleletting others know your needs now.

And if you’ve gathered your friends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere, you may fearthat saying no will bring back the kind of conflict you grew up with— or destroy the nice atmosphereyou now enjoy. You need to understand that in true friendship it’s okay to put your own needs firstfrom time to time.

Be clear about the message you want to send. For example, “I really love your company but I alsoneed some privacy. So please call before you come over.” Edward

  66. We can learn from the first letter that Joan . A. lives away from her parents B. takes pride in her friends C. knows Mr. Expert quite well D. hates her parents very much

  A. Joan considers her friends more important than her privacy B. Joan’s friends visit her more often than she can accept C. Joan doesn’t like the parties at all

  D. Joan dislikes the boyfriends her friends bring over

  68. According to Mr. Expert, why can’t Joan tell her friends her feelings? A. She is afraid of hurting her friends. B. She does not understand true friendship.

  C. Her family experience stops her from doing so. D. She does not put her needs first.

  69. The underlined word “conflict” in the second letter means . A. dependent lifeB. serious fight C. bad mannersD. painful feeling

  70. The second letter suggests that Mr. Expert . A. advises Joan on how to refuse people

  B. warns Joan not to quarrel with her friends C. is worried about Joan’s problem D. encourages Joan to be brave enough C

A nurse and her elderly uncle were waiting for a bus at a corner in downtown Chicago. Buses came by,not the one they wanted. The woman finally half-entered one of the buses and asked the driver if the busshe wanted stopped at that corner.

The driver looked at her but made no answer, so she repeated the question. To her surprise, he thenclosed the door, on her arm, and drove off.

The woman, her arm stuck in the door, ran alongside the bus, shouting. Passengers said the driverstopped after almost a block only because they, too, were shouting.

When the driver finally did stop and open the door, the woman jumped on the bus to get his busnumber. Then he took off again and went another couple of blocks before other shouting passengerspersuaded him to stop and let the woman off.

After the driver’s bosses at a tax-supported governmental company(CTA) heard of the incident, theylooked into it and set his punishment: a five-day suspension(停职) without pay. That struck me as ratherlight.

But Bill Baxa, the company’s public-relations man, said, “That’s pretty serious punishment.”Five days off work is serious punishment for dragging a woman alongside a bus by her arm? Baxa said,“Any time you take money away from someone, it is a terrible punishment. The driver makes $14 an hour.Multiply that by 40 and you can see what he lost.”

Yes, that comes to $560, a good sum. But we know that people in the private company are fired forfar less serious mistakes every day. If the people who run the bus company think that the loss of aweek’s pay is more than enough, I offer them a sporting suggestion: Give me a bus. Then have theirwives stick their arms in the doorway of the bus, and I’ll slam the door shut, start the bus quicklyand take them for a fast one-block run.

And I’ll pay $560 to anyone who is bold enough to try it. Any taker? Mr.Baxa? Anyone? I didn’t think so.

  71. The nurse half-entered one of the buses because . A. the bus they wanted didn’t stop there B. she wanted the driver to stop the bus

  C. she wanted to get some information from the driver

  D. she and her uncle couldn’t wait any longer at the corner

  72. How many blocks was the woman away from the corner where she waited when the bus driver finallylet her off?

  A. Almost one blockB. Almost two blocks.

  C. Probably three blocks. D. Probably five or six blocks. 73. Why did the author offer a sporting suggestion?

  A. Because the CTA paid little attention to the incident. B. Because the bus driver had not been fired. C. Because he wanted to threaten the CTA people.

  D. Because he thought the punishment was a light one. 74. From this passage we can infer that .

  A. many people in the private sector are fired for small mistakes every day.

  B. people in the private sector usually get more punishment than those in the public sector C. people in the private sector get much higher pay than those in the public sector D. People in the private sector are better trained than those in the public sector 75. Which of the following is NOT true?

  A. The company is a bus company supported by the government.

  B. The writer and Mr. Baxa disagreed with each other on the bus company’s decision. C. The driver finally stopped the bus under the pressure of the passengers.

  D. The writer asked the bus company to give him a bus if his suggestion was refused. D

If you can read a clock, you can know the time of the day. But no one knows what time itself is. One

way to think about time is to imagine a world without time. But there could be no movement, because timeand movement cannot be separated.

In early human history, the only changes that seemed to repeat themselves evenly (有规律地)were themovements of objects in the sky. The most easily seen result of these movements was the differencebetween light and darkness. The sun rises in the eastern sky, producing light. It moves across the skyand sinks in the west, causing darkness. The appearance and disappearance of the sun was even and

unfailing. The periods of light and darkness it created were the first accepted periods of time. We havenamed each period of light and darkness one day. People saw the sun rise higher in the sky during thesummer than in winter. They counted the days that passed from the sun’s highest position until it

returned to that position. They counted 365 days. We now know that is the time Earth takes to move oncearound the sun. We call this period of time a year.

They also developed a way to use the changing faces of the moon to tell time. The moon was “full”when its face was bright and round. The early humans counted the number of times the sun appeared

between full moons. They learned that this number always remained the same---about 29 suns. We now knowthis period of time as one month.

Early humans hunted animals and gathered wild plants. They moved in groups or tribes from place toplace in search of food. Then, people learned to plant seeds and grow crops. As hunters, people did notneed a way to measure time. As farmers, however, they had to plant crops in time to harvest them beforewinter. They had to know when the seasons would change. So, they developed calendars.

No one knows when the first calendar was developed. But it seems possible that it was based onmoons, or lunar months.

  76. The underlined word “unfailing” (in para.2) is closest in meaning to “ ”. A. reliableB. everlastingC. limitedD. changing

  77. Which of the following is NOT the method early people used to tell time? A. Sun position.B. Sun lightness. C. Moon shape.D. Planting crops.

  78. Why did people invent the first calendar to measure time? A. Because early humans hunted animals and gathered wild plants. B. Because early farmers had to grow and harvest crops in time. C. Because early people had to search for food in groups.

  D. Because early humans moved in groups or tribes from place to place. 79. Which of the following is TRUE?

  A. Why early people developed calendars is not clear. B. When the first calendar was developed remains unknown. C. What early people based the first calendar on is certain. D. How early people counted a day is still unknown. 80. We can learn from the text that .

  A. time and movement are loosely related even in modern times

  B. the light and darkness differences of the sun were the only movements in the sky C. the period of twenty-nine suns is called one month

  D. early humans first accepted periods of time created by the moon.
