SomeThings We Know about Language

Manythings about language are a mystery, and many will always remain so.

8 /总页数 15

Butsome things we do know.

First,we know that all human beings have a language of some sort. There

isno race of men anywhere on earth so backward that it has no language,

noset of speech sounds by which the people communicate with oneanother.

Furthermore,in historical times, there has never been a race of men

withouta language.

Second, there is no such thing as a primitive language. There are many

peoplewhose cultures are undeveloped, who are, as we say, uncivilized,

butthe languages they speak are not primitive. In all known languages

wecan see complexities that must have been tens or thousands of years

indeveloping.

Thishas not always been well understood; indeed, the direct contrary has

oftenbeen stated. Popular ideas of the language of the American Indians

willillustrate. Many people have supposed that the Indians communicated

ina very primitive system of noises. Study has proved this to benonsense.

Thereare, or were, hundreds of American Indian languages, and all of them

turnout to be very complicated and very old. They are" certainlydifferent

fromthe languages that most of us are familiar with, but they are no more

primitivethan English and Greek.

Athird thing we know about language is that all languages areperfectly

adequate. That is,each one is a perfect means of expressing the culture

ofthe people who speak the language.

Finally,we know that language changes. It is natural and normal for

languageto change;the only languages which do not change are the dead

ones. This is easy to understand if we look backward in time. Change goes

onin all aspects of language. Grammatical features change as do speech

sounds, and changes in vocabulary are sometimes very extensive and may

occurvery rapidly. Vocabulary is the least stable part of any languages.

Inthe second paragraph the author thinks that__________.

"HappyBirthday to You"

Themain problem in discussing American popular culture is also one of

itsmain characteristics: it won't stay American. No matter what it is,

whetherit is films, food and fashion, music, casual sports or slang, it's

soonat home elsewhere in the world. There are several theories why

Americanpopular culture has had this appeal.

Onetheory is that it has been "advertised" and marketedthrough American

films, popular music, and more recently, television. (46) They are, after

all,in competition with those produced by other countries.

Anothertheory, probably a more common one, is that Americhn popular

cultureis internationally associated with something called "the spirit

ofAmerica. " (47)

Thefinal theory is less complex: American popular culture is popular

becausea lot of people in the world like it.

Regardlessof why it spread, American popular culture is usually quite

rapidlyadopted and then adapted in many .other countries. (48) "Happy

Birthdayto You," for instance, is such an everyday song that its source,

itsAmerican copyright, so to speak, is not remembered. Black leather

jacketsworn by many heroes in American movies could be found, a generation

later,on all those young men who wanted to make this manlylook their own.

Twoareas where this continuing process is most clearly seen are clothing

andmusic. Some people can still remember a time when Tshirts, jogging

clothes, tennis shoes, denim jackets, and blue jeans were not common daily

13 /总页数 15

weareverywhere. Only twenty years ago, it was possible to spot anAmerican

inParis by his or her clothes. No longer so: those bring colors, checkered

jacketsand trousers, hats and socks which were once made fun of in

cartoonsare back again in Paris as the latest fashion.(49)

Thesituation with American popular music is more complex because in the

beginning, whenit was still clearly American, it was often strongly

resisted.Jazz was once thought to be a great danger to youth and their

morals, and was actually outlawed in several countries. Today, while

stillsblowing its rather American roots, it has become so well

established.Rock "n" roll and its variations, country & westemmusic,

allhave more or less similar histories. They were first resisted, often

inAmerica as well, as being "lowclass," and then as "adanger to our

nation'syouth. " (50) And then the music became accepted and wasextended

anddeveloped, and exported back to the U. S.

AAsa result, its American origins and roots are often quickly

forgotten.

BButthis theory fails to explain why American films, music, and

televisionprograms are so popular in themselves.

CAmericanin origin, informal clothing has become the world's first

trulyuniversal style.

DTheBBC, for example, banned rock and roll until 1962.

E.Americanfood has become popular around the world too.

F.Thisspirit is variously described as being young and free, optimistic

andconfident,informal and disrespectful.
